Did someone say “dessert?” Hummingbird cake, shoofly pie, sweet potato pecan pie, blueberry crisp… all swirl in the discussion of an official state dessert for North Carolina. The rub? Another state can always claim our desserts. Southern cooking is heavy on both sweet and tradition, and state lines blur in the face of our preferred ways to end a meal.

But, dare we say, who needs dessert when you’ve got donuts? Krispy Kreme originated in Winston-Salem North Carolina. Duck Donuts started on the Outer Banks in Duck North Carolina. Wilmington’s beach-goers have Britt’s Donuts in Carolina Beach. There’s Wake and Bake, The Donut Inn, Rise Biscuits & Donuts, Dub Donuts… like we said, who needs dessert. If you are visiting, save your calories at dinner, get up the next morning for an early walk, and find one of our favorite donut shops.
